Muddy River – Wills Preserve

Muddy River – Wills Preserve is a 114 acre property located on the upper reaches of the Muddy River in Topsham. Conserved in 2025, the property contains 40 acres of freshwater wetlands and a wooded upland area, buffering 9,000 feet of shoreline along the Muddy River and associated streams and providing the opportunity for potential marsh migration as sea levels rise. Part of a 1,400-acre undeveloped habitat block, the Muddy River – Wills property provides critical habitat for a wide range of species. It contains both Significant and Tidal Waterfowl and Wading Bird Habitat, and is home to native brook trout, alewives, white-tailed deer, coyotes, fishers, and many resident and migratory bird species.

The Preserve features a well-used multiuse trail system that has been maintained by the former landowner and the Topsham Trail Riders, a state recognized ATV and Snowmobile club with over 15 miles of ATV trails and 30 miles of Snowmobile trails in Topsham, ME, for years, providing trail connections as a thru route for snowmobiling and ATVs, in addition to more recent use by mountain bikes.

Please note that there is no parking area located at the Muddy River – Wills property, which can be accessed via trail connections from the Topsham Transfer Station Trails and Pump Track (also known as Topsham Ponds) located at 94 Townsend Way where parking is available.

The Muddy River – Wills property is located approximately 1.5 miles from Topsham Ponds Trails via connecting trails maintained by the Topsham Trail Riders. The paved portion of West Bay Bridge Road leading to the property is a public way, however the 30 feet of dirt road between the pavement and the property is not a public way and cars cannot park along the shoulder of the gravel portion of the road or they are at risk of being towed.
