Lisa Martin is a Master Gardener, former BTLT Board member, and currently sits on the Land Trust’s Community Engagement and Programs Committee. No one imagined the huge logistical and bureaucratic challenges involved in moving 250 first graders from their school to the Community Garden – just a few blocks away – but Lisa’s leadership, creativity, and coordination has created something successful in so many ways.
The Tom Settlemire Community Garden has been a wonderful place to tie together three of my passions: teaching, gardening, and connecting with the outdoors. For me, it has been quite satisfying to see first graders and multi-age students, beam with excitement as they press apple cider, shine with a sense of accomplishment as they transplant their delicate seedlings, and carefully extract sunflower seeds from the enormous seed heads. The Land Trust has been an excellent host, and the Community Garden a wonderful destination for experiential learning as the kids literally “dig deeper” in their thinking and understanding about plants, plant life cycles, and why we should value the plants all around us.~ Lisa Martin
