Do you enjoy noticing seasonal changes in your backyard — date the first dandelion blooms? First robin or butterfly sighting of the year? Become a trained observer and put your nature observations to use as part of a national data collection program!
This in-person volunteer training session for the Signs of the Seasons program will take place June 7, from 10-12, at the Ecology Center. Led by instructors from UMaine Cooperative Extension & Maine Sea Grant, participants are trained to observe and record the phenology (seasonal changes) of common plants and animals living in their own communities.
Begin indoors with an introduction to how the program works, and then head outside to practice on the plants and animals on-site near the Ecology Center.
You will leave with the tools and knowledge needed to set up your own site to record seasonal changes wherever you live.
Location & Parking: This event will be held at the CREA Ecology Center – After you have entered Highland Green, stay straight for 1.5 miles. You will pass the golf club on your left. Stay on Evergreen Circle, the winding main village road of Highland Green, for approximately 1 more mile. When you see Junco Drive on the left, the parking area for the Ecology Center and hiking is just ahead, on the left. Please park at a slight angle with the nose of your car toward the woods. The Ecology Center is not visible from the parking area. To reach the Ecology Center, head down the stone stairs to the right of the kiosk and stone bench. At the bottom of the steps, head right on the dirt road (Rensenbrink Way) to reach the Ecology Center (approximately 2-3 minute walk).
