Facing and Embracing ChangeConservation Serving the Future of New England

We are excited to invite you to join us for our 2021 Annual Meeting on November 14th. You will have the chance to hear about BTLT’s accomplishments, get an update on the financial status on the organization, and our members will vote on new and returning the Board of Directors members.

In addition, David Foster, Senior Conservationist at the Harvard Forest will describe changes in the New England forests over time and how conservation can and must support ecosystem and community resilience in the face of change.

Foster will begin by providing some historical, ecological, and paleoecological perspective on the New England landscape. He will then consider how important it is to “fight climate change, not the manifestations of climate change.” In other words, how land managers and conservationists must make management decisions that support climate mitigation, but also use diverse tools to support the resiliency of local landscapes as they face dramatic changes. Finally, he will describe some of the most important human changes needed toward these ends, such as reducing consumption of resources and energy; increasing local production of food and wood; new ownership and management of Maine’s forest lands by communities, tribal groups, and local landowners; and mindfully addressing climate change, biodiversity, and human well-being.

David Foster is Senior Conservationist at Harvard Forest, and focuses his research on plant ecology, landscape dynamics, conservation, and long-term studies of forest ecosystems.

His interests are around understanding the changes in forest ecosystems that result from human and natural disturbance and applying this understanding to the conservation and management of natural and cultural landscapes. As part of his conservation work David and colleagues developed Wildlands and Woodlands – A Vision for the New England Landscape, which lays out an ambitious plan for the protection and conservation of forest and farmland across the region.
