For the first time in its history, the Dempsey Challenge is coming to Brunswick on September 30! This year marks the 10th year of the Dempsey Challenge, a two-day, non-competitive run, walk, cycle fundraiser which champions the spirit of celebration and culture of paying it forward. The Challenge is presented by Amgen and hosted in actor Patrick Dempsey’s hometown of Lewiston. Each dollar raised by participants benefits the Dempsey Centers – leaders in Quality of Life care for individuals and families impacted by cancer.

BTLT is so excited for this event that we decided to set up cheer stations!

We hope you’ll join us on September 30!

We need you!

We need volunteers to help us cheer on the athletes on the 65 and 100 mile rides (click here to see the routes). We will have “cheer stations” meeting at the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust Farmers’ Market Green at Crystal Spring Farm, located at 277 Pleasant Hill Road in Brunswick and at the corner of Church and Pleasant Hill Roads from 9am – 2pm on September 30. You can come for the whole time or just a short stint, we just ask that you sign up!

There are plenty of parking spaces at the Market Green at Crystal Spring Farm and space along the road for folks cheering at the corner of Church and Pleasant Hill. If you do not want to park on the road, you are welcome to park at the Market Green, but we do ask that you arrive 15 minutes early to give yourself time to walk to your station.

So, what is a cheer station?

Cheer stations are designated groups of people showing their collective support for Dempsey Challenge participants by cheering them on and HAVING FUN! You will provide necessary encouragement for participants as they journey toward the finish line. It is also a great way to engage your friends and coworkers!

For participants, hearing spirited messages of support and encouragement can get them through a challenging portion of the course. Groups may choose to wear themed costumes, bring signs or banners, play music, offer snacks to participants, or even have a piñata for participants to hit as they pass! There are lots of possibilities for showing encouragement, even if it just means a smile and a yell!

What to bring:

  • weather protection (sunscreen, rain coat, hat, etc.)
  • cell phone
  • a chair
  • snacks and water
  • a positive attitude!
