Celebrating Love Maine Trails Month

June is Love Maine Trails Month, a statewide celebration of the trails that connect us to nature, our communities, and one another. Organized by the Maine Trails Coalition in partnership with Maine Trail Finder, Love Maine Trails Month highlights both the joy of exploring Maine’s trails and the ongoing stewardship needed to keep them accessible, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

In Maine, free public access to trails is one of our greatest shared assets. Trails provide opportunities for recreation, exercise, wildlife observation, and quiet reflection. They support local economies by attracting visitors, strengthening community connections, and contributing to both physical and mental well-being! Whether you’re taking a short walk after work, introducing a child to the outdoors, or heading out for a weekend adventure, trails help make Maine a healthier and more vibrant place to live.

Here in the midcoast, we’re fortunate to have an incredible network of public trails, and this year has brought exciting additions to that list!

  • This spring, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust opened the new trail system at Hideaway Farm in Topsham. The 33-acre preserve features a gentle trail that winds through the forest and beautiful views of the Cathance River.
  • We’re also celebrating the recent completion of an ADA-accessible trail at Woodward Point Preserve in Brunswick. This important addition helps ensure that more people can experience the beauty of the Preserve, with a thoughtfully designed trail that expands access to the outdoors for visitors of varying mobility levels.

Looking for your next outdoor adventure? Head to BTLT’s trail page for more local spots or check out these other excellent resources to help you discover trails close to home and across the state:

  • The Get Active Southern Midcoast Guide offers a wealth of information on local outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • Maine Trail Finder provides detailed maps, trail descriptions, accessibility information, and activity recommendations.
  • Maine Hikes has all kinds of great lists, blog posts, and artwork celebrating local trails across the state.

Love Maine Trails Month is also a reminder that trails don’t maintain themselves. Behind every footbridge, trail marker, boardwalk, and scenic overlook are dedicated volunteers, land stewards, and community partners who invest countless hours caring for these special places. The Maine Trails Coalition works to support these efforts statewide, helping organizations collaborate, share resources, and advocate for Maine’s trail network.

This month, we encourage you to visit a favorite preserve, explore somewhere new, volunteer for a trail workday, become a BTLT member, or simply take a moment to appreciate the people and organizations who help make these experiences possible!
