Protected Properties

BTLT currently owns two properties in Brunswick and holds conservation easements on an additional 14 properties in Brunswick and Topsham. Three hundred thirty-three acres are owned outright at the Captain Alfred Skolfield Preserve and Crystal Spring Farm, and 848 acres are held under a variety of individualized conservation easements. Each easement works to protect a particular parcel of land from development and clearly defines permissible uses in perpetuity. Some of these parcels are open to the public, but most easements are agreements made with individual landowners seeking to protect the undeveloped character and future of their property and do not include public access. The public still benefits from such easements, however, because they preserve open space for view sheds, protect habitat for plants and animals, and preserve the rural heritage and character of our communities. Each of the properties is monitored annually to ensure that the terms of the easement are being honored. BTLT continues to work to obtain easements that build on the land already protected.
